The Federal Budget

Fighting for Fiscal Responsibility.  Congressman Meeks is a strong supporter of fiscal responsibility, advocating budget policies that strengthen Social Security and Medicare while also allowing us to balance the budget, pay down the national debt and invest in crucial priorities such as education, the environment and national defense. He has consistently voted for responsible tax relief that permits the nation to meet its other priorities and commitments. That is why Congressman Meeks opposed President Bush's tax plans in 2001 and 2003 because they were based on unreliable budget projections - disproportionately tilted toward the wealthiest 1% of Americans; and threatened to drive the budget back into deficit and increase the national debt.

Congressman Meeks concerns were correct. Last year the GOP fiscal agenda created a deficit of almost $400 billion, and accumulated deficit would grow by more than $2 trillion over the next decade threatening Social Security and Medicare, and our ability to invest in the future.
